The original term "gauntlet" in English was derived from Middle French "gantelet," meaning an armored glove. Gauntlet is a protective glove and a form of armor used to protect the wrist, hand, fingers and forearms. They may be made of leather, chainmail or fully-articulated metal plates. in the past, gauntlets were an essential piece of armor, since the hands and arms were especially vulnerable in hand-to-hand combat. With the rise of easily- reloadable firearms, hand-to-hand combat became less common and so gauntlets lost most of their strategic value. In present day, gauntlets are mostly used in contact sports, such as fencing.
