Medieval Europe looked back at Celtic world as a golden age of Europe. Genetically and culturally, they played a major part in laying the foundations for the great achievements of the European race. The Celts are considered by historians as "the fathers of Europe." The Celts first burst into recorded history in the writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans in about 500 B.C. From the 2nd millennium BC to the 1st century BC, they spread over much of Europe. Their tribes and groups eventually ranged from the British Isles and northern Spain to as far east as Transylvania, the Black Sea coasts, and Galatia in Anatolia and were in part absorbed into the Roman Empire as Britons, Gauls, Boii, Galatians, and Celtiberians.
