Chainmail (or Chainmaille)

A Brief History of Chainmail

The genesis of chainmail (also known as chainmaille) as we know it dates back nearly 2,500 years. The European variety of chainmail was developed by the Celts in England and France, and co-opted by the Romans who met them in battle. Chainmail served as a flexible, easily repaired alternative to plate metal armor. Chainmail was used in battle as recently as the early 1900s in central Asia.

Today, chainmail is worn by historical reenactors and other history aficionados. Chainmail armor also makes beautiful, intriguing display pieces. Whether you are looking for functional wearability, or a unique home accent, Realm Collections has you covered.

Chainmail from Realm Collections

We feature a huge selection of chainmail armor based on that used during the Medieval period. Fully wearable yet great for display, our chainmail pieces include shirts, coifs, gauntlets, hauberks, and leggings. To view our full selection, follow this link: Medieval Chainmail Armor.

Types of Chainmail

The word chainmail (or chainmaille) is derived in part from the French "maille", which means mesh. Within this broad definition, there are several different styles available. Blackened mail, or Black Prince mail, is dipped in black lacquer for water resistance. Hero's mail is made from smaller, finer rings for increased protection. We also offer riveted aluminum mail, which is perfect for historical reenactors who need the authentic look, but not the authentic weight of Medieval chainmail. Flattened steel ring mail is hammered to create a much denser weave, creating the effect of liquid steel.

These are just a few of the different types of chainmail available from Realm Collections. To learn more about styles of mail, follow this link: Types of Chainmail.
