The barbute is a conical, open-faced helmet, whose sides and back are extended down to protect the neck. The barbute is characterized by a rounded skull and a t-shaped opening for the face, which are sometimes expanded into a fully open face. The Barbute helmet is of style used in the mid 15th century. The barbuta, which is typically Italian in style, is known as an 'Italian sallet' in Germany and a 'French sallet' in France. The barbute, which originally came from Italy, was eventually worn all over Europe, though usually with the addition of a bevor, or, more often, a mail aventail. In the latter form it can be mistaken for a small bascinet without a visor, the difference being the barbute has cheek protection.
