The Normans not only conquered England and Sicily, they fought all through the Mediterranean lands and in the Crusades. This conical helmet has been called "Norman" because it was popular with them and also well-illustrated in the Bayeux Tapestry depiction of the Norman Conquest of England. This helmet provided a glancing surface to blows and was light, airy and comfortable - important features for warriors wearing them for days on end. The Normans were descendants of Vikings, who in 911 settled down in Normandy (France) and established their own kingdom. They expanded their area to Sicily in Italy and conquered England in 1066 with the Battle of Hastings.
