The Legend of the Katana Sword
The katana sword has a long and rich history. The first known evidence of the Japanese swordsmithing tradition dates back over 4,000 years. The legendary swordsmith Amakuni and his son Amakura were charged with designing a sword that would not break in battle. Through prayer to the Shinto gods and experimentation, they developed the long, slightly curved, single-edged sword that would become the predecessor of the katana sword.
The katana sword is a shorter version of the ancient tachi sword, which was used primarily by warriors on horseback. The tachi was too long and unwieldy for foot soldiers, so the katana sword was designed for better handling in man to man combat.
