An angel is thought to be an ethereal creature in number of human mythologies; benevolent spiritual being who mediates between heaven and earth. Angel's duties are to assist and serve God or gods of many religious traditions. The word angel comes from a Latin word, angelus, meaning messenger. Angels also serve as guardians of an individual or nation. Judaism and Christianity base their belief of angels on references in the Hebrew scriptures to heavenly servants and hosts. Angels are mentioned throughout the Christian scriptures and Christian tradition identifies nine orders of angels. Islam's hierarchy of angels descends from the four throne bearers of God to the cherubim who praise God, the four archangels, and lesser angels such as the hafazah (guardian angels).
