Monk is a person who adopts a strict religious and ascetic lifestyle. The word is from a Greek word monachos, referring to a solitary person. The literal meaning of the word is 'the lonely one.' It was first used in the 3rd century to name the new phenomenon of men living solitary and ascetic lives in the Egyptian desert.
