A hoop skirt is a women's undergarment that was worn in various periods to hold the skirt extended into a fashionable shape. The Hoop Skirt was especially fashionable in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Hoop Skirts usually consist of fabric petticoat with casings to hold a stiffening material. Lightweight Hoop Skirts can be seen even today, worn under full-skirted wedding gowns. Although in the old days the stiffing material varied, such as rope, osiers, whalebone, steel or nylon; hoop skirt today is usually with nylon hoops.
