Despite the adulation and reverence given to the sword, the spear, not the sword, was generally the weapon of choice for Vikings. No Viking warrior would be more than a few feet from his spear at anytime. They in fact had several different types of spears. Used as throwing weapons and as pikes, spears were an indispensable part of their daily routine.
Simple wooden spears have been around since the beginning of human history. Spear points have been made of every conceivable material which can be edged or pointed: wood, stone, bone, animal spines, and metal. Throwing spears were generally very long while thrusting spears tended to be shorter. The basic spear, when used for thrusting, was the ancestor of all weapons in the polearm group.
