Medieval Crossbow
|
Medieval Crossbow. Circa 1644. The unique Medieval Crossbow of long ago has been beautifully reproduced in Italy and is a fascinating decorative replica, with moving parts. The Medieval Crossbow is 25-1/2" long x 16" wide. Made in Italy.
Crossbows were vital in attack. The crossbows had such a power, when a bolt was shot or a burning missile, they impaled a stone wall. However, the castle tower offered an advantageous position for their use, due to a much farther reach when employed at the top of a fortified wall. This extra height allowed the missiles to be fired into the air, sail a further distance and impede the charge of an attacking force.
Crossbows were effectively being used in European warfare around 800 to 1500 AD. Although the longbow was a better weapon for various reasons, crossbow was valued for its simplicity. It could've been used effectively after just one week of training while it could take years with longbow.
