Great Griffin Pendant is constructed of sterling silver. The pendant measures 1 5/16 inches in width. This mighty creature from Greek Mythology which has the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle, takes a striking pose inside a circular filigree framework. Griffin is a legendary creature with the body of lion and the head of an eagle. The griffin was consecrated to the Sun; and ancient painters represented the chariot of the Saun as drawn by griffins. The griffin was a common feature of animal style Scythian gold; it was said to inhabit the Scythia steppes that reached from the modern Ukraine to central Asia. There was a rich amount of gold and precious stones and when strangers approached to gather the stones, the creatures would jump on them and tear them to pieces. |
