Black Prince Shield
|
Black Prince Shield is a beautifully decorated 31-1/2" high shield. The shield is primarily intended for use as a wall display piece, though it may be adapted for parade and theatrical use. Fabricated in steel, the Black Prince Shield features a variety of bronzed-steel embossing and baked enamel finish and is equipped with chain hanger and bracket for attaching one or two swords to the back of the shield. Historically accurate.
Black Prince was the eldest son of Edward III. He became the duke of Cornwall in 1337, the first duke in England, and Prince of Wales in 1343. He established great reputation for bravery at the battle of Crecy when he was only 16. It was apparently French who called him the Black Prince, probably because of his black armor. However, the name was not recorded in England until the 16th century. The Black Prince was born in 1330 and died in 1376.
