Gjermundbu Spectacle Helmet
|
The Gjermundbu "Spectacle" Helmet is a superbly made with a 'spectacle' life face guard. The helmet is based on a Gjermundbu Helmet from Norway. Gjermundbu "Spectacle" Helmet is made of 18 gauge steel with reinforced skull and goggles. The Helmet is a master for Viking admirers. The Gjermundbu is expertly crafted; a superb copy of the original and complete with neck guard of mail, as the original appears to have. The helmet is lined with leather.
The height from rim to top is about 6". Inside circumference is about 25".
The Gjermundbu helmet was the only true surviving example of a wealthy Viking warrior’s head protection. The Gjermundbu Helmet is based on a classic Viking helmet found in a Norwegian burial mound. Found in nine fragments, the helmet has been re-constructed and is now housed in the Museum of National Antiquites in Oslo. It dates from around 970 CE and is considered to be the finest helmet found of that era. The "spectacles" (officially "occularia"), provided excellent facial and nasal protection, while chain mail provided flexible protection to the back and sides.
