Celtic Targa Brooch
|
Celtic Targa Brooch is a very special brooch beautifully detailed with intricate Celtic designs, inspire by medieval Highland shields. The Celtic Targa Brooch is constructed of pewter, accented with deep black, emerald green and harvest rust enamel. The overall length of the Celtic Targa Brooch is 1-3/4" x 1-3/4".
The design of Celtic Targa brooch was motivated by the Scottish targes, which are round shields. The targe had different decorations; it was decorated as the maker of the targe desired. Targa, from Old-Franconian, means shield.
The Celtic Targa brooch also features some Celtic knotwork. The delicate and twists and turns of the Celtic knotwork are found just about everywhere, and it’s especially popular in designing jewelry. The intertwined designs suggest eternity and interconnectedness, and knots may have been made at one time to foil evil spirits. Interwoven figures of people and animals may have represented the interdependent nature of life-two or more knots laced together symbolize lovers, hunters and their prey, God and man, etc.
