The main function of castles was defense. The walls would usually come up first so nothing could hurt the castle while it was being built. During the Middle Ages, lords and kings often built castles for territorial expansion and control of a region. A castle was a stronghold from which a lord or baron could control surrounding territory.
From the 16th century on, castle walls had to be made increasingly thicker and stronger in response to the development of artillery. Only a few castles were made into mighty fortress. Instead, the nobility increasingly moved to more comfortable residential castles, Many, were luxuriously ostentatious and magnificent buildings.
