Our full size Saint George shield follows the French style. The white cross on a red field is painted in brilliant color on a traditional kite-shaped battle shield. Designed to be carried into battle, Saint George battle shields were deliberately simple in ornamentation – the cross was meant to be seen from a distance and strike fear into the hearts of the infidels. Crusaders across Europe wore the blazon of St. George's cross on their clothing and shields. While the most recognized today is the Red Cross on a white field, many Crusaders from France carried the reverse – a white cross on a red shield. This identified not only that they were Crusaders, but where they were from – national pride ran high even while crusading against the infidels. Use your Saint George shield for display or carry at the next re-enactment or Faire. Shield includes a hanging chain and handle for functional usage. Overall Height: 24 1/4" Width: 18" |
