German SS Dagger
|
One of the most phenomenal weapons of World War II is this german SS dagger. Its structure and meaning is very significant to the World War II participants as well as other keen people with a passion for fight. Such a German Dagger version was worn by the black-uniformed members of Hitler's SS. The significant motto engraved on the blade translated from German "Meine Ehre Heisst Treue" to the English "My Honor is Loyalty."
This German dagger was produced in December 1933 where the black composition handle contains the SS Runes with Eagle and cast metal (zinc) black scabbard containing nickel-plated fittings.
Its design was created from the idea of the “Holbien Dagger.” The grip was black in color and had the SS runes inserted at the top of the grip in a small circular button. The SS Rune signifies Wholeness and the Sun and all that is good as well as the use of powers of good in order to vanquish evil. The centre of the grip contained the Nazi eagle holding as wreath with the Nazi swastika. Some of the later grips were a plain oak wood with black pigment while now the grips are made of a dark ebony wood. The scabbard had a black oxide finish with a clear lacquer overcoat. The scabbard fittings on early daggers are solid nickel and look the same as fittings found on the SA dagger.
The daggers produced from February 1934 started becoming limited where after their inspection, they were stamped with a number: I, II or III. The old SS crossguard stamping was fazed out and the RZM logo and the relevant manufacturer's number was added to the blade. On the 9 th November at the SS Anwarter, the SS dagger was given a special status (the SS Mann) and presented to the owner. To dispose of the SS dagger was considered a disciplinary matter because it was a symbol of their office. Starting January 1935 any man was supposed to give back the dagger whe he was dismissed from the service and receive a certificate if retired wanting to keep his dagger. Such special dagger, however, was withdrawn from production in 1942.
