Renaissance Steel Shield is made in India of 16 gauge steel with a rolled edge and leather grips. The Steel Shield was popular from the late 15th until well into the 17th century. As the Middle Ages gave way to the Renaissance, wood shields gradually yielded in popularity to steel shields, such as this, round domed. A terrific asset for mercenaries in crashing through lines of pikemen, this shield was easily maneuverable and strong. Mercenary is a hired professional soldier who fights for any state or nation without regard to political principles. However, it is considered an insult when the term is used to refer to a soldier in a regular national army. From the earliest days of organized warfare, governments supplemented their military forces with mercenaries. After the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453), Swiss soldiers were hired out all over Europe by their own cantonal governments and won a high reputation.
