Armaduras Shield of Charlemagne, crafted in Toledo, Spain, is made in burnished steel with bronzed embossing. The piece is equipped for wall hanging and is complete with a back-mounted bracket that allows one or two swords to be fixed behind the shield for an outstanding wall display. Charlemagne's reign is often referred to as the Carolingian Renaissance, due to the flowering of scholarship, literature, art and architecture. Most of his surviving works of classical Latin were copied and preserved by Carolingian scholars. Charlemagne took serious effort in his and others' scholarship and learned to read in his adulthood, although he never really learned to write. This was quite an achievement for kings at that time; most were illiterate.
