As the Middle Ages gave way to the Renaissance, wood shields gradually yielded in popularity to steel shields, such as this, round domed. A terrific asset for mercenaries in crashing through lines of pikemen, this shield was easily maneuverable and strong. Mercenary is a hired professional soldier who fights for any state or nation without regard to political principles. However, it is considered an insult when the term is used to refer to a soldier in a regular national army. From the earliest days of organized warfare, governments supplemented their military forces with mercenaries. After the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), Swiss soldiers were hired out all over Europe by their own cantonal governments and won a high reputation. Since the late 18th century, most mercenaries have been individual soldiers of fortune. Diameter: 23 1/8"
