Excalibur was the amazing sword of Arthur. Though this sword had appeared in Geoffrey of Monmouth's work, called Caliburn, as the legendary sword that was a gift from Avalon, it wasn't until in the later legend that Excalibur was a sword given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. The sword that Arthur had drew from a stone, which was a sign that he was the true king of Logres (Britain), was not the real Excalibur. Since Arthur's first sword was broken, Merlin took the king to a lake, where they met the Lady of the Lake. They saw a hand holding a beautiful sword, raised out of the water, in the middle of the lake. The lady informed Arthur that the sword belonged to her. She would give the sword to Arthur only if the young king granted her a gift or boon in return. Arthur promised the Lady of the Lake that he would. On the hero's death, the sword must be returned to its origin.
