Edward of Woodstock was known as the Black Prince. In 1337, he became the first English Duke and in 1343 became the Prince of Wales. He proved to have extraordinary military talent that was noticed at the Battle of Crecy when he was only sixteen years old. Edward is almost always called the Black Prince but he was never known as such during his lifetime. The Black Prince title was created at least 200 years after his death. Its origin is uncertain; some historians think that he may have worn black armor or the name was made up by French storytellers due to disastrous military defeats he had caused France.
